3 Things MVP Is Thinking About in 2023

MVP friends, Happy 2023!
The MVP team is thinking and strategizing about a lot this year (we won’t jump into all of it now) – but there are three things we wanted to share with you as the new year begins!
First, we’re evaluating immediate opportunities to invest in early 2023 – from playing defense in Georgia and Texas to passing life-changing legislation in Michigan and Minnesota. We’re investing early to win district attorney races in Pennsylvania, US House races in New York and California, and legislative chambers in Virginia – where just last week our local partners flipped a Republican State Senate seat by 348 votes. Our first win of the cycle!
Our #1 priority this spring is a seemingly-obscure state supreme court race in Wisconsin – see below. And preparations for the 2024 presidential race have already begun. The MVP team is having hundreds of conversations to determine where, when, and how it’s most strategic to invest in the lead up to 2024 – and it’s not necessarily where you’d think.
Second, we’re evaluating, and celebrating what we learned from 2022. If you want to feel extremely happy and proud, read our Top 25 Closest Races MVP Helped Win, which details some of the odds-defying victories our partners won with your support. But, we absolutely cannot rest on our laurels. That would be a sure way to lose in 2024. And witnessing the unfolding MAGA House horror show these past few weeks, we can’t help but think: if only we’d turned out another 6,683 votes across five districts, we could have a Democratic trifecta right now instead of this travesty of governance.
Third, we’re dreaming BIG and thinking long-term about what it will actually take to build a Progressive Decade. We are soberly mapping out how to prevent worst case scenarios in 2024 (i.e. President DeSantis; a Republican trifecta; right-wing control of the Senate for the next decade, etc). We’re strategizing how to realistically save the Supreme Court and win on issues from climate to abortion rights. And we’re scheming on how to double or triple funding for local organizing to transform American politics – and win a Progressive Decade.
As for the Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, it’s arguably our most important campaign of the year– and it’s coming up soon. On April 4th, we have a golden opportunity to change Wisconsin’s political trajectory. This race has the potential to give Democrats a 4-3 majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and to finally draw fair maps in one of the most gerrymandered (and pivotal) states in the country. With fair maps, Democrats would have a chance to win a trifecta in this evenly-divided swing state and to pick up as many as two House seats — which we really need to win back Congress. April 4th in Wisconsin is a must-win. Over the next few months, we need to raise millions of dollars to support over 20 local organizations operating in over 30 counties.
