What is MVP doing to stop authoritarianism?

MVP and our allies and grantee partners are waging a multi-pronged, all-hands-on-deck effort to stop authoritarianism and pull democracy back from the brink.

Among the ways we are building power and fighting back (countering GOP redistricting, protecting vulnerable communities, and more — see below), MVP is deeply involved in organizing resistance and noncooperation across all pillars of society to stop the rise of authoritarianism. We have an ongoing seat at the national, behind-the-scenes "Fight Back Table" coalition and are a frequent funder of most of its leadership and membership, including Indivisible and Working Families Party.

Overview of Key Strategies

  1. Fuel Civil Resistance: History shows that sustained civil resistance is a key part of stopping authoritarianism. MVP partners like Indivisible and Working Families Power are leading movement-wide coalitions driving this work across all pillars of society through efforts like the Hands Off and No Kings days of action and the One Million Rising mass-training program, as well as ongoing organizing to hold GOP representatives accountable for the MAGA agenda.
  2. Defend Impacted Communities: MVP partners are on the frontlines with immigrant and other impacted communities through rapid response, mutual aid, lawsuits, media pushes, and more.
  3. Counter GOP Election Rigging: MVP partners are working to stop and counteract GOP redistricting in California (Battleground CA), Missouri (People Not Politicians), and elsewhere.
  4. Win Down-Ballot in 2025: So far, Democrats are overperforming in every key contest. MVP partners are fueling the fight and gearing up to carry that energy right into an epic Blue Wave in the 2026 midterms. In 2025, partners are prioritizing elections with a key role in stopping the slide into authoritarianism, particularly Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court race and Virginia’s gubernatorial and state legislative elections.
  5. Flip the House in 2026: A Democratic House can block MAGA bills, stop the dismantling of federal agencies, influence federal spending, launch investigations, issue subpoenas, file lawsuits, and more. MVP is funding local partner groups in 26 target districts, and we are also an instigator and the first funder of the Battleground Alliance, a coalition of labor, activist, and community groups building permanent organizing capacity in those districts and many more. → See our full House Plan for details.

The Long View: Survival, Power, Transformation

In the long term, MVP's end goal is to build a better democracy that delivers for all people – thus addressing the broad discontent that got us here in the first place.

As Dakota Hall, Executive Director of the Alliance for Youth Action (MVP's national youth-focused grantee partner) writes:

It is about survival in the short term, power in the medium term, and transformation in the long term.

We are not only fighting to stop authoritarianism, we are fighting for the chance to build a democracy that actually delivers. Imagine a country where the vote is protected and expanded, where every community has a real say in decisions that shape their lives, and where young people see government not as a tool of repression but as a vehicle for opportunity. That future is within reach if we commit to the hard work of organizing with discipline and vision.
