What is MVP doing to protect free and fair elections?
Thanks to our decentralized election administration system, any attempt to bypass electoral guardrails would require the complicity of thousands of state and local officials.
MVP partners, who have always led the local and state fights for fair elections, will play a key role in preventing Trump and MAGA foul play.
In particular, we are focused on the following strategic points of intervention:
- The U.S. House redistricting wars
- Secretaries of State elections
- State Supreme Court elections
- Rapid-response election protection
The U.S. House Redistricting Wars
MVP partners are countering GOP redistricting in California (Battleground California), Missouri (People Not Politicians), and elsewhere; and, MVP is working closely with our ally, FRR Action, to support the highest-leverage efforts nationwide.
Secretaries of State Elections
Secretaries of State hold the keys to fair election administration, from managing voter rolls to setting procedures, ensuring voter access, countering election misinformation, and certifying results.
In 2026, Secretaries of State are up for election in 26 states. Our goal is to defend five seats (AZ, MN, MI, NV, and WI, whose race MVP partners helped win in 2022 by 7,625 votes) and flip two: GA and VA (in 2025, by electing a Democratic governor, who appoints the Secretary of the Commonwealth).
State Supreme Court Elections
State Supreme Courts hold the final say on a wide range of issues, from fair redistricting to election certification, voting rights, abortion access, workers' rights, and more.
2025 targets
- Pennsylvania: Protect Democrats’ 5-2 majority by retaining all three Democrats on the ballot.
- Wisconsin: Protect liberals’ 4-3 majority by defending an open liberal seat. (Won in April!)
2026 targets (not comprehensive)
- Montana: Protect liberals’ 4-3 majority by electing an ideologically comparable successor to a retiring liberal-leaning member.
- Michigan: Protect Democrats’ 6-1 majority by defending two incumbent Democratic seats.
- Nevada: Elect liberal-leaning justices to the two vacant seats on the nonpartisan court.
- North Carolina: Defend Democrats’ 2-5 minority by re-electing Justice Anita Earls.
- Wisconsin: Expand liberals’ 4-3 majority by flipping the open seat of a retiring conservative.
Rapid-Response Election Protection
In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, our partners led a multi-pronged approach to safeguarding the process, from ballot curing to legal action, safety at the polls, and digital security. Obviously, we lost that Presidential race, but these are the same strategies that will stop foul play in future elections:
1. Count Every Vote
Risks: Targeted attempts to disenfranchise voters (particularly voters of color), such as prematurely closing Election-Day polling locations and rejecting legitimately cast ballots.
Response: Support partners’ legal efforts to ensure voters’ access to the polls; provide access to tech tools and training to bolster partners’ ballot-curing campaigns.
2. Mobilize Public Support
Risks: GOP attempts to sow doubts and peddle lies to depress turnout, disenfranchise voters, and discredit the election – from deceptive robocalls to false election conspiracies.
Response: Support our partners in leveraging unified messaging and mass demonstrations of public support to defend the electoral process.
3. Bolster Legal Action
Risks: Voter disenfranchisement; GOP lawsuits contesting election results; election officials delaying certification due to political allegiance or GOP pressure campaigns.
Response: Support our partners’ and allies’ court cases – from enlisting lawyers to recruiting plaintiffs, ensuring testifiers’ safety, mobilizing public support, and driving the media narrative.
4. Protect Physical Safety
Risks: Intimidation and threats of right-wing violence against voters, canvassers, & organizers.
Response: Support safety training for partners’ staff and volunteers, so they can safely turn out voters — and help ensure community safety in the event of unrest after Election Day.
5. Strengthen Digital Security
Risks: Doxxing, phishing, infiltration, and other attempts to sabotage our partners’ digital systems and voter/member data – which could hinder post-election rapid-response efforts.
Response: Support our partners to assess, monitor, and fortify their digital infrastructure; and ensure that data is safe, synced, and secure on platforms with the greatest data integrity.
