Do elections even matter anymore?

Let’s address the elephant in the room: “Will there even be elections that mean anything, now that Trump is in power?” Our answer: Unequivocally, yes — and we will use them to end the MAGA era.

Donald Trump will not serve in the White House in 2029. No President can cancel elections (even by martial law), run for a third term (even as VP), or stay in office after their successor’s constitutionally scheduled Inauguration. And, thanks to our decentralized election administration system, any attempt to bypass electoral guardrails would require the complicity of thousands of state and local officials. 

Yes, Trump will still try to subvert our elections, but we can (and must) stop him. He will use every trick in the playbook to rig the outcomes in 2026 and 2028, but we will not surrender. We must:

• Protect free and fair elections with every tool at our disposal – see our election protection plan.
• Vote out the GOP down-ballot in 2025, then flip the House (and possibly Senate) in 2026.
• End the MAGA era and begin to deliver real progress by gaining a federal trifecta in 2028.

Our best-case scenario is a long shot worth taking.

In some ways, the odds are against us — but Blue Waves through 2028 are a real possibility. The GOP has several structural advantages, from a skewed Senate map to a gerrymandered House map (that may get even worse). But our side has strengths to leverage, from negative Trump ratings to Democratic overperformance and the historical precedent of opposition party gains in midterms.

Our #1 job: Envision the Blue Wave, reverse-engineer the conditions, and invest accordingly. Among numerous challenges, we also have real opportunities — all of which rely on funding year-round organizing to channel outrage over Trump and the GOP’s cruel betrayal of working people into voter action. This is where MVP comes in. Our single biggest job is to chart our most credible path to victory, be clear-eyed about what it will take to get there, and mobilize the resources to maximize our chances.

Electoral Roadmap: The Best-Case Scenario

• 2025: Win Down Ballot (WI, PA, VA, etc.) to guard states from MAGA and advance good policy.
• 2026: Win the Midterms: Flip the House and (maybe) Senate, and gain power down ballot.
• 2027: Win Down Ballot, growing our bottom-up power and gaining momentum for 2028.
• 2028: Win a Bold Federal Trifecta: Flip the Presidency, hold Congress, and gain state power.
• 2032: Surmount a Right-Tilting Electoral College by winning MI, PA, WI, and AZ, GA, or NC.
