As long-time members of the legal community and advocates for civil liberties, we should be alarmed by the imminent threat to democracy and the rule of law posed by the rise of authoritarianism, far-right political groups, and ultra-conservative politicians in the United States.

Members of the progressive legal community have a professional and personal responsibility to ensure that American constitutional values civil liberties, the right to vote, freedom of speech, and religion are preserved in all aspects of community life, from school boards to city councils to state legislatures to Congress.

In this challenging and worrisome time, many in the legal community have become deeply committed to the Movement Voter PAC (MVP). MVP is an important and exciting organization that makes certain that the voices of all Americans are heard and that the political landscape is effectively representative of the broad diversity of our country, especially those at greatest need.

MVP raises funds and distributes them to grassroots organizations that work to get out the vote, energizing and engaging people in historically underrepresented and marginalized communities. This proven strategy wins elections in the short term and builds the power of these communities in the long-term, shifting the political landscape. Since its inception in 2015, MVP has raised and distributed approximately $120 million to these organizations.

MVP-supported organizations were crucial to the successful election of Janet Protasiewicz to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, flipping the body’s ideological majority. Similarly, in Pennsylvania MVP’s grassroots organizations helped secure a 5-2 Democratic majority on that state’s Supreme Court. MVP’s groups had many down-ballot victories in 2023, including critical county-level positions that have election administration authority (over drop boxes, early voting, ballot curing), which will help shape voter turnout in 2024.

With the 2024 elections coming up, could there be a more important time to support these efforts? We are writing to see if you will join us in attending an online meeting to present MVP to our colleagues in the legal community on March 3, 2024 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Eastern. At that time knowledgeable representatives from MVP will give a brief presentation and take questions. If you would like to participate, we request that you do two things:

  1. Register and attend the virtual event if you are available the evening on March 3, 2024.
  2. Invite everyone you know in the legal community to attend by forwarding this invitation to your contacts.
