Special Deputy to the Executive Director

Summary of Position:

This job is not for the faint of heart. This person will work very closely with our Executive Director, Billy Wimsatt – less on scheduling or buying plane tickets, more on helping manage his zillions of people and responsibilities and take as much as you can off his plate every day. This job requires several extremely high level skill sets, because you are basically sharing the job description of the ED, co-managing lots of complex projects, and keeping myriad internal and external stakeholders happy. This person has to LOVE movements, politics, and donor organizing. You have to love spreadsheets, systems, correspondence, and lots of humble, detail-oriented tasks – and you have to be able to keep up with a lot of things super fast. But it is also a really interesting job that, for the right person, will help prepare you to be an Executive Director one day. Ideally you are based in Western Massachusetts, but anywhere in the ET zone (or elsewhere if you’re a very early riser) is possible for the right person. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic thought partnership and administrative support
    • Work to ensure ED’s time goes to top priority work, including maintaining and updating ED’s to-do list, Google calendar, and Calendly 
    • Work with ED to prioritize daily/weekly/monthly tasks; stop anything slipping through the cracks
    • Have daily check-ins with ED
    • Work with ED to brainstorm and troubleshoot daily problems
    • Correspond with donors and partners, as needed
    • Manage and respond to ED’s email; help prioritize email in-box
    • Help ED to operate in accordance with organizational protocols and systems and make sure that team members are consulted as appropriate
  • Donor and relationship management support
    • Track major gifts and necessary follow-up, ensuring that the ED follows org-wide donor engagement CRM and donation process protocols and that all donor and pledge information is logged in CRM
    • Proactively manage and update CRM with new donor and partner information
    • Correspond in a timely manner with donors independently and in collaboration with ED, fielding questions and providing information to keep the ball rolling
    • Pull reports to guide and inform ED’s fundraising strategy and processes
  • Grantmaking support
    • Manage operational grantmaking processes for ED’s National Portfolio, which includes entering grants into Airtable, monitoring their approval status, and making sure groups are informed and funds are moved
    • Project-manage and administer time-sensitive grantmaking projects, as needed
  • Other
    • Support Executive Director with urgent and/or special projects, as needed
    • Update and circulate movement calendar and other meta-organizing projects 

 

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Experience with CRMs, Airtable and Google Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and coordinate multiple priorities
  • Passion for all things donor cultivation and fundraising
  • Eagerness to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment 
  • Ability to meet deadlines independently and manage time effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work successfully with diverse audience, i.e. staff, management, volunteers, donors, and vendors
  • Strong attention to detail and keen ability to step back and think critically to identify and solve problems before they happen
  • Self-starting demeanor: Experience working with multiple teammates with an understanding of prioritizing self-defined deadlines
  • Eagerness to learn, reduce bottlenecks
  • Thrives in ambiguity, has sound judgement and is highly skilled at asking clarifying questions

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Commitment to MVP’s mission of supporting work at the intersection of grassroots organizing and electoral politics to build a progressive decade
  • Basic understanding of U.S. electoral politics and current social movement landscape
  • Experience with online fundraising platforms and donor databases/CRMs

 

Compensation and hours:

This is a salaried position with a base salary between $60,000-$70,000 with full benefits, commensurate with skills and experience. This is a full-time, fully remote position.
